Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to question certain calls made by the official, following the protocol currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
