Around 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Vehicles, walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Officers report they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then found multiple other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Police report early analysis show the substance was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; investigators are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in association with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for tips.
A high-ranking official stated the vandalism rendered him speechless and had to be solved rapidly.
"This act affects the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on social media, recalling the murder of nine victims by a shooter aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
