This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like typical physical horror, but inside Together resides a profound examination about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they still love each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
