The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
