One Piece Concludes a Quarter-Century Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio announcing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and featured numerous filler arcs. Starting in the new year, after the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will go on a three-month break until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, One Piece will produce two seasons every year for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, rhythm, and timing of the original manga.” Yet, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime had a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the animation quality and allow the comic to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to deliver viewers with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the action. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the news, this may lead to one episode of the anime adapting a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or additional to compensate for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many side stories, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two at most coming out each annually, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
