Minister Says MoD Investigating Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, with Staff Instructed to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Cars.

An defense minister has revealed that the MoD is actively investigating the possible security risks posed by Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been instructed to refrain from talking about secret matters in any vehicles.

Security Advice for Defence Personnel

In a recent interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD officials have been told not to discuss secret information while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

The minister stated that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but noted that security is a issue in all contemporary cars.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified level in any car, due to the increasing threats of surveillance that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using every cars from China, Pollard responded: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Broader Security Background

This announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could enable China to disable public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

The broader security environment underscores the significance of robust measures and caution in every areas of government operations, from vehicle use to discussions practices.
