European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
